Rall Wines
South Africa's Winemaker of the Year, 2025
Rall Wines
Donovan Rall is one of the most important voices in South African wine today. A key Cape Winemaker’s Guild member, and 2025 Winemaker of the Year by Tim Atkin MW, Donovan has built his reputation on precision blending—one of the toughest jobs in wine—and sourcing fruit from over 30 vineyards across the Western Cape. Each harvest he manages nearly 60 separate fermentations and aging lots, a painstaking process that demands both skill and vision. The result is a remarkable palette of blending material that produces small-batch wines consistently ranked among South Africa’s most exciting (and hardest to find).
From Rugby Fields to the Cellar
Born in the northern suburbs of Cape Town, Donovan first studied genetics and psychology at Stellenbosch before switching to viticulture and enology. A former second-row rugby player (he stands 6’7”), he graduated in 2005 alongside classmates, and legendary winemakers in their own right, Jean Smit (Damascene) and David Sadie (David & Nadia). International harvests followed at Cloudy Bay in New Zealand and in the Rhône Valley, before returning home to work with Miles Mossop (Tokara) and Eben Sadie (Sadie Family Wines).
A first-generation winemaker, Donovan launched Rall Wines in 2008 with little more than a couple of barrels and the drive to create something new. His debut wines, Rall White and Rall Red, immediately gained attention — the White earning a coveted 5-star rating in Platter’s Wine Guide.
Defining a New Era
It’s very important to mention that, in the early-2000s, South African fine wine was dominated by Stellenbosch Bordeaux blends. Donovan and his Swartland contemporaries helped shift that narrative, showing the world that other regions — and other grapes — could shine just as brightly. Cinsault, Syrah, Grenache and even Chenin started to see far more attention as its quality started to rise dramatically. This movement, later known as the Swartland Revolution, put authenticity, site expression, and forgotten grapes at the center of South Africa’s wine story.
Vineyards & Sourcing
Today, Donovan works with Chenin Blanc, Syrah, Grenache Noir, Grenache Blanc, Cinsault, Cinsault Blanc, Verdelho, and Viognier from a multitude of regions: Ceres Plateau, Wellington, Piekenierskloof, Stellenbosch, Darling, and the Swartland. Like many in the New Wave, he doesn’t own land but instead partners with growers, in many cases taking over farming responsibilities himself. His close collaboration with viticulturist Rosa Kruger has helped him uncover some of the Cape’s greatest hidden gems, including old-vine Chenin and a remarkable schist-soiled Syrah block once destined for a cooperative.
Each Rall Wine is built from multiple ferments across a mix of neutral oak, amphora, concrete eggs, and Stockinger barrels. The diversity of material gives Donovan extraordinary blending options — and his ability to weave them into seamless, expressive wines is what sets him apart.
Style & Inspiration
Donovan’s style is hands-off and minimal intervention, always focused on letting the vineyard speak. Mediterranean and Rhône influences are clear, but his wines are distinctly South African in their clarity, energy, and rugged sense of place. Inspirations include the Mullineuxs’ work with soil expression, Porseleinberg’s Rhône-like Syrah, Pierre Gonon’s purity, and the precision of Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey.
Beyond the Cellar
When he’s not in the vineyards or the cellar, Donovan is a family man, spending time with his wife and two children, Ava and Noa. His grounded, thoughtful approach to life is mirrored in his wines — honest, generous, and deeply connected to the land.
