Vulpes Wines
Driven By Site and Passion
Vulpes Wines
Vulpes Wines is one of South Africa’s most compelling new labels. Founded in 2022 by Nuschka de Vos, it draws from regeneratively farmed vineyards to make wines that reflect their site and the care that goes into them. As a former winemaker at biodynamic pioneer Reyneke, Nuschka approaches every bottle with curiosity and an incredibly deep respect for the land.
About Nuschka
Nuschka grew up on a small organic farm in Plettenberg Bay, 325 miles east of Cape Town, where home-grown food and wine were everyday staples. Spending her days outdoors, hands in the soil, she developed an early and lasting respect for sustainability and farming in harmony with nature.
Nuschka’s foundation in grape growing began with her first internship under legendary viticulturist Rosa Kruger, who became a mentor and inspiration. Rosa has been a pioneering force in South Africa’s old vine preservation and regenerative viticulture, notably through her work with the Old Vine Project, which safeguards historic vineyards and promotes sustainable farming practices. Nuschka went on to study Viticulture and Oenology at Stellenbosch University, one of the world’s leading wine schools, while continuing to spend her holidays in the vineyards with Rosa, deepening her knowledge of old vines and how to best nurture them.
Her career quickly became international: she made wine in Bordeaux, the Mosel, and New Zealand, as well as completed internships at Rupert & Rothschild in 2012 and 2013. In 2015 she joined Reyneke Wines, where she spent six years making wine with a philosophy rooted in biodynamics, regenerative farming, and patience. That experience shaped her conviction that great wine is grown in the vineyard, not manufactured in the cellar.
Vulpes Wines
The name Vulpes (Latin for “fox”) nods to her surname, de Vos, and reflects the intelligence and intuition behind her winemaking. In late 2021, Nuschka left Reyneke to start Vulpes Wines. Her first release, less than a year later, was a 94-point Chenin Blanc from two dry-farmed bush-vine parcels on the granite slopes of the Paardeberg in the Swartland. It immediately drew attention, with South Africa’s most prominent wine journalist, Tim Atkin MW, calling it a “salty, intense, focused delight, shimmering with acidity and vibrancy.”
All of her wines are made with minimal intervention: regeneratively farmed fruit, native yeast fermentations, gentle handling in the cellar, and neutral barrel aging. For Nuschka, site is everything. As she says: “I fall in love with a site and block, and the more time I spend there, the more I want to make the best possible wine that shows off its character.”
The portfolio has since grown to include three wines:
- Chama Chenin Blanc (Paardeberg) – from granite soils, carrying vibrancy, texture, and energy.
- Velox Chenin Blanc (Citrusdal) – from a high-altitude, once-neglected vineyard, marked by concentration and a streak of crisp acidity.
- Cana Cabernet Sauvignon (Polkadraai Hills) – sourced from Reyneke’s biodynamic vineyards, showing restraint, freshness, and purity of fruit.
The Future
Vulpes remains a small-scale project, and Nuschka intends to keep it that way. New wines are in the pipeline, but growth will always be measured. The goal is not volume — it’s individuality, purity, and a clear expression of place.
