Pieter Ferreira
Defining Cap Classique, Elevating South Africa
Pieter Ferreira
For decades, Pieter Ferreira has been synonymous with South African sparkling wine, affectionately earning the moniker “Mr. Bubbles.” After a celebrated 32-year career as winemaker at Graham Beck—South Africa’s pioneering Cap Classique producer—Pieter has become one of the country’s most influential figures in traditional method sparkling wine. Today, alongside his wife Ann, he crafts boutique sparkling wines under the Pieter Ferreira Cap Classique label, a project founded in 2012 to push the boundaries of Cap Classique.
With roots in Robertson’s limestone-rich soils and a philosophy of finesse and precision, Pieter’s sparkling wines reflect decades of expertise, experimentation, and an unwavering pursuit of perfection. He champions South Africa’s diversity, sourcing fruit from across the Cape’s varied terroirs, and remains dedicated to showcasing the unique potential of Cap Classique—not as a Champagne imitation, but as a distinctly South African expression.
Pieter’s legacy extends far beyond his wines. As Chairman of the Cap Classique Producers Association (CCPA)—founded in 1992 by a group of passionate “fizz fanatics”—he has been instrumental in establishing and promoting the rigorous standards of the category while expanding its global recognition. Additionally, Pieter is sought after as a consultant on sparkling wine projects around the world, sharing his expertise to help elevate producers across continents.
While Ann brings vision, heart, and leadership to the Pieter Ferreira brand, Pieter continues to innovate, ever humble in his belief that he’s “still chasing the perfect bubble.” Together, they’ve not only shaped the story of Cap Classique, but have cemented its place as a world-class sparkling wine with a uniquely South African soul.
