Riebeekberg

Riebeekberg is situated at the eastern end of the Swartland district, a mere 55 miles northeast of Cape Town, making it easily accessible to adventurous tourists from the city. The vineyards of Riebeekberg lie along the eastern slopes of the Kasteelberg Mountain, benefitting from a hot and dry climate in the summer. Cooling westerly breezes from the nearby Atlantic Ocean help moderate the daytime heat, while the mountain provides afternoon shade. Despite the summer heat, minimal irrigation is required thanks to the vines’ ability to dig deeper for nourishment in the well-draining Malmesbury shale soil, resulting in lower yields and wines with concentrated flavors.

Riebeekberg showcases a diverse range of grape varieties, with Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon being particularly esteemed. Additionally, the white grape varieties Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay thrive in this terroir, yielding rich and complex wines. The region boasts a rich viticultural history, rivaling that of the renowned Constantia ward. The neighboring towns of Riebeek were established in the 1660s, and vineyard planting began with the arrival of French Huguenots in the area. Many of the wineries established during this era continue to flourish today, contributing to Riebeekberg’s enduring legacy.
