Springfontein Rim
Springfontein Rim is a wine-producing area located in the Walker Bay district. It is located to the south of Stanford Foothills and Klein River, and to the west of Sunday’s Glen. The boundaries of this region are primarily defined by sandy soils with finely divided shells and calcrete lenses. The latter are layers or accumulations of calcium carbonate (lime) deposits found within the soil and impact wine production by affecting soil drainage, nutrient availability, root development, and contributing to the unique terroir expression of the wines. They can impede water movement, influence nutrient accessibility, restrict root penetration, and impart distinct mineral qualities to the grapes. The acidic soils and low temperatures (from the proximity to Walker Bay) make for a wonderful home to cool climate varietals, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir. Expect to see a lot more of this region in the next 10 years.
