Cape Agulhas, Africa’s southernmost point and where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet, is home to thriving cool-climate, maritime vineyards. This scenic region encompasses the charming village of Elim, a Moravian mission settlement founded in 1824, which holds the distinction of being a national monument. During the summer months, the vineyards benefit from strong and refreshing coastal winds, creating a cool ripening season that is particularly favorable for Sauvignon Blanc. The conditions also show promise for other grape varieties like Semillon and Shiraz. Despite its relatively small size, the coastal district of Elim has piqued significant interest within the winemaking community due to its great potential.
